Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking is one of Andy’s passions. He is able to provide skills sessions, half day taster activities or full day guided tours.

Unfortunately we do not have mountain bikes for hire so groups would need to bring their own cycles or we can arrange hire with a local provider.

Gorge Scrambling

This activity is known by lots of terms: gorge scrambling, gill scrambling, canyoning etc.

It does involve walking—but also climbing, sliding, jumping and getting wet. It is a fun half day activity.

Buoyancy aids, outer wear, wetsuits and technical equipment are provided.

Caving: Technical Instruction

Introductions to Single Rope Technique (SRT) will allow you to reach depths of almost 200m in the Yorkshire Dales.

We regularly run instructional courses that will allow you to join with existing Caving Clubs on trips requiring descent and ascent of ropes.

For those with SRT skills but wishing to explore independently, Ropework and Rigging days can also be arranged.

Mid-week adventure breaks for the young at heart…

If you are 55 years plus, love the outdoors and fancy a new challenge, Hardraw Old School Bunkhouse offers mid-week breaks of 2 or 3 nights when sociable outdoor adventures can be combined with enjoyment of Wensleydale scenery and more relaxing sampling of local fare.

Following requests of many visitors to the bunkhouse, these adventure breaks for older adults allow a sociable introduction to new challenges in the fantastic scenic backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Adventurous activities offered are chosen by guests and can be selected from walking, caving, abseiling, climbing or gill scrambling. Participants can choose between 2 and 4 activities during a mid-week adventure break. Our recommendation would be one activity per day as this allows adventure to be interspersed with more relaxing enjoyment of the countryside and the numerous excellent local eateries.

These short breaks are self-catering but opportunities are provided to allow participants to arrange jointly cooked meals and/or meals out at local cafes and pubs. Adventure break participants have sole use of the bunkhouse and no-one will be required to scale ladders to top bunks – unless of course you wish to do so!

Cost includes: bunkroom accommodation (just for adventure break participants, single sex rooms available), a selection of half-day activities chosen by participants (with fully qualified instructors & all technical equipment provided) and provision of information regarding local facilities and self-guided excursions.

Adventure breaks focusing on one specific activity can be arranged, please call Helen on 07513279899 to discuss your requirements.

Please note: These adventure breaks require a minimum of 3 persons to take place.

Caving Trips

Your caving trip can be as straightforward or challenging as you wish to make it—so please discuss the group’s needs fully when booking this activity.

Typical challenges include:

  • Short roped climbs /descents
  • ‘Crawls’—can be dry or in water
  • ‘Squeezes’—where you need to lie down and wriggle through a small gap (usually optional)
  • Waterfalls
  • Traversing deep pools

Taster session destinations include Long Churn (near Selside) and Crackpot (Swaledale) although many alternatives are possible.

More extreme adventures are also offered. These are usually full day trips and involve using ladders and ropes to access and explore slightly deeper caverns.

If you have a historical interest in mining, there are many mines in Wensleydale and Swaledale that are open for exploration by experienced cavers

Stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, columns and many fossils are plentiful in Yorkshire caves. If the chance to view some spectacular formations is on your hit list, please make this clear when booking your trip as, with the qualifications we hold, trips can be tailor made to suit your interests.
